Known as the `Garden City’, Christchurch is home to 370,000+ residents who are spoilt when it comes to outdoor activities. The city boasts more than 700 city parks, 15 golf courses and the nearby Port Hills which are ideal for walking, running and biking. With great annual sunshine hours there is plenty of time to enjoy it all!

Getting around

Christchurch is mostly flat, so it really lends itself to cycling and there are quite a few cycling lanes or shared pedestrian and bike paths. When you are cycling in the inner city you only need one gear because there are no hills to climb!

Navigation by car or bicycle is generally simple due to the grid layout, but watch out for one-way streets and bus-and-taxi-only intersections in the central city.

Public bus services cover the whole city and areas of interest such as Sumner, New Brighton Beaches and Lyttleton which lie outside the central city. There is also a restored Tramway that runs in a smaller loop around the inner city.

Christchurch Airport is the gateway for Christchurch and the South Island. Travel time from the airport direct to Christchurch city centre is approximately 15-20 minutes.
